Ceuta, the Pearl of the Mediterranean

Ceuta 8 Jan 2024

Our first post of 2024 had to be dedicated to the city where we were born: Ceuta

When we say that Ceuta is the trending destination, we mean not only in terms of tourism, but also in terms of business. The city has become a hub for various tech companies thanks to the advantages offered by its tax regime. A good example of this is the establishment of the majority of online gaming companies.

The city is located in a strategic spot between two seas and two continents, making history come alive in every corner.

Antiquity and Foundation

Ceuta, the jewel of the Strait of Gibraltar, has roots that delve deep into the annals of antiquity. Its history begins with its founding by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC. It later passed through Carthaginian and Roman hands, with each civilization leaving its mark on this strategic enclave.

Visigothic and Byzantine rule: During the decline of the Roman Empire, Ceuta experienced a brief period under Visigothic rule, followed by Byzantine occupation. However, it was with the arrival of the Muslims that the city underwent significant transformation.

The Muslim era: Ceuta became an important stronghold during Muslim rule in the region. It was occupied by the Umayyads, Almoravids, and Almohads, each contributing to the city’s architectural and cultural development.

Portuguese and Spanish conquest: In 1415, Ceuta underwent a drastic change when it was conquered by the Portuguese during an expedition led by Prince Henry the Navigator. This conquest marked the beginning of a new era and attracted the attention of other European powers.

In 1668, after several alternating periods of occupation, Ceuta was finally ceded to Spain under the terms of the Treaty of Lisbon. Since then, it has remained an autonomous city and a key player in the geopolitical chessboard of the Strait of Gibraltar.

20th Century and Present Day: Ceuta has witnessed crucial events throughout the 20th century, including the Spanish Civil War and its strategic role during World War II. Today, Ceuta is a vibrant city that blends its rich heritage with a palpable modernity.

Tourist Attractions

Ceuta attracts visitors with its unique blend of cultures, rich history, and stunning landscapes. Here, the old and the new intertwine to offer a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers.

Ceuta breathes history from its ancient walls to its cobblestone streets. The Isabel II Lookout, Plaza de los Reyes, and the Royal Walls are just some of the landmarks where the past comes to life. History lovers will find stories in every corner that go back centuries.

Dreamy beaches: Ceuta also offers golden sandy beaches like Playa de la Ribera and Playa del Chorrillo. Relaxing under the Mediterranean sun or enjoying water sports are part of the unique experience this enclave provides.

Delightful Cuisine

The culinary fusion in Ceuta reflects its multicultural history. From the flavors of Moroccan cuisine to traditional Spanish dishes, every bite is a journey in itself. Local markets, such as the Central Market, are true paradises for lovers of fresh and authentic food.
