Jersey connects better with Europe: DFDS launches a new maritime contract
DFDS has signed a historic agreement with the Government of Jersey to operate ferry routes between the island and key destinations in Europe for the next 20 years. Starting March 28, 2025, DFDS will manage connections to Poole and Portsmouth in the UK and Saint-Malo in France, significantly improving Jersey's connectivity with the European continent.
Commitment to ferry transport
This agreement, which comes into effect at the end of March 2025, promises to transform Jersey’s maritime transport infrastructure. With DFDS's commitment to increasing ferry frequency during peak seasons, both residents and tourists will benefit from smoother connectivity. In addition, the introduction of high-speed vessels and investment in new ships will ensure better year-round connections for the island.
Future plans
DFDS plans a major investment in its fleet, with three new vessels to be added by 2032. These include a Ro-Pax vessel, two high-speed ferries, and one ship dedicated to freight. These improvements aim to optimize both passenger and cargo transport—essential for sectors such as tourism and hospitality in Jersey.
Benefits for tourism and the local economy
The agreement between DFDS and the Government of Jersey not only benefits residents, but also promises to boost tourism on the island. With shorter travel times and increased capacity, Jersey is expected to attract more visitors, contributing to the growth of the local economy. Additionally, improved freight connectivity will further strengthen key commercial sectors.
Words from the CEO
DFDS CEO Torben Carlsen stated that the company is fully committed to delivering a reliable and enhanced service for Jersey’s residents, businesses, and visitors. “The ferry service is a vital link for the island, and we are excited to embark on this collaboration with Jersey and its local community,” Carlsen said.
