Baleària unveils the first 100% electric fast ferries at FITUR 2025.
At FITUR 2025, Baleària has made a historic milestone in sustainable maritime transport in Spain by announcing the construction of two 100% electric and zero-emission fast ferries. This revolutionary project positions the company as a pioneer in the transition to cleaner and more efficient maritime transport, aligned with global sustainability and carbon neutrality goals for 2050.
Sustainable routes between Spain and Morocco.
The new fast ferries will operate on the strategic route between Tarifa (Spain) and Tangier Ville (Morocco), a key link for both passenger and freight transport. With this innovation, Baleària reinforces its commitment to reducing the environmental impact on one of the busiest routes in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Technical features of the fast ferries.
Each vessel will be equipped with 16 MW of electric power, supplied by four next-generation electric propellers powered exclusively by batteries. These batteries will be fully recharged during one-hour stopovers at the ports of Tarifa and Tangier Ville, ensuring continuous emission-free service.
The vessel design also embraces a sustainable approach, using materials and technologies that minimize environmental impact. Furthermore, the integration of advanced propulsion systems ensures quiet and efficient operation.
Leadership in sustainability.
This project strengthens Baleària’s leadership in adopting sustainable technologies within the maritime sector. For several years now, the company has been working toward carbon neutrality by 2050, implementing measures such as cleaner fuels and renewable energy integration in its operations.
The construction of these fast ferries is further evidence of Baleària’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), proving that it is possible to combine efficiency, speed, and environmental responsibility.
Impact on the maritime sector.
The introduction of 100% electric fast ferries not only marks a turning point in Spain’s sustainable maritime transport, but also sets a new standard for the entire industry. As the first of their kind to operate on international routes, these vessels become a benchmark that could inspire other ferry operators to adopt more environmentally friendly technological solutions.
